In any case, the front fog lamps are not standard equipment. In fact, there are many puzzles on how and when to use them. Unlike the frequently used high beam and low beam lamps, fog lamps are really useful only in a few very special cases. In fact, fog lamps are specially designed for bad weather and other situations where visibility is seriously reduced by mist, fog and even dust in the air.

The basic argument in support of fog lamps is that ordinary headlights, especially high beam lamps, often reflect back to the driver's eyes. This dangerous situation can be avoided by aiming the lamp at the strip at a steeper angle, which is the design purpose of the fog lamp.

Further adding to the confusion is the misunderstanding that all fog lamps are yellow, and many aftermarket suppliers use the terms "fog lamp" and "driving lamp" to refer to exactly the same products or "combination lamp" components that provide "fog lamp and driving lamp". The term "driving lamp" is actually a vague phrase, sometimes referring to high beam lamps, sometimes referring to auxiliary headlights mainly used for off-road, and even referring to products used in fog.

What is a fog light or fog lamp?

The front fog lamp and fog lamp is a kind of automobile headlamp, which is designed to emit light with a strip beam. The beam is usually designed with a sharp cut-off at the top, and the actual lamp is usually installed at a low place and aimed at the ground at an acute angle.

The position and orientation of fog lamps can be compared and compared with high beam and low beam lamps to accurately reveal how different these seemingly similar devices are. Both high beam and low beam lamps aim at a relatively small angle, which allows them to illuminate the road far in front of the vehicle. In contrast, the sharp angle used by fog lamps means that they only illuminate the ground in front of the vehicle.

Some fog lamps produce selective yellow light. There is a relatively common misunderstanding that all fog lamps have yellow bulbs, yellow lenses, or both. In fact, selective yellow has actually been used in fog lamps and conventional high beam lamps at all stages of automotive history. Therefore, although some fog lamps do produce selective yellow light, many fog lamps produce white light.

In fact, the strip beam and the aiming mode of the beam make the fog lamp a fog lamp, not a color.

What is selective yellow light?

The idea behind the selective yellow headlights and fog lights is that shorter wavelengths of blue and purple light tend to produce glare and glare when driving at night. This is especially true in harsh driving conditions. When blue light is reflected from fog, snowflakes and even rain, it often produces glare effect.

Since selective yellow lights are unlikely to produce dangerous glare when driving at night under harsh conditions, some vehicles have used selective yellow lights. The same advantage also appears in the selective yellow used in fog lamps. However, filtering blue light does affect the total light output, which is not desirable for night driving in good weather conditions.

When to use fog lamps

Because the goal of fog lights is low, and many use selective yellow lights, it is useless when driving conditions are good. This means that there is no reason to turn on the fog lights unless you encounter poor visibility while driving.

Some situations where fog lights may be useful include poor visibility caused by rain, fog, snow and even excessive dust in the air. If you find yourself driving in poor visibility and the high beam is reflected back, causing glare or dazzling effect, you should avoid using the high beam. If your low beam lights also produce so much glare that you can only see snow, fog, rain or dust, a good set of fog lights may let you really see the road.

The problem is that fog lamps, unlike high beam lamps, can only illuminate the ground in front of the vehicle. This makes it very dangerous to drive at any speed when using only fog lights. In fact, in some areas, even if your high beam produces glare, it is illegal to drive with only fog lights on.

In most cases where fog lights are actually needed, their main function should be to let you move forward slowly and carefully until you reach your destination or another place where you can wait for bad weather.

What is the rear fog lamp?

The front fog lights are designed to allow you to move slowly in extremely poor visibility, while the rear fog lights are designed to prevent anyone from hitting you under the same conditions. The problem is that in very poor visibility, your tail lights may not remind other drivers of your presence until it's too late. This is especially true if the person behind you is driving at an unsafe speed under current conditions.

In most cases, the rear fog lights are red, which makes them superficially similar to brake lights and running lights. In fact, the rear fog lamp and brake lamp will produce similar light intensity. Therefore, even if the vehicle does not have rear fog lights, braking has a similar effect on visibility.

The main problem with rear fog lamps is that because they are the same color and as bright as brake lamps, the driver may mistakenly think of them. In order to solve this problem, the regulations stipulate that the rear fog lamp must keep a specific distance from the brake lamp. Some vehicles also use only one rear fog lamp instead of two.

Who needs fog lights?

Since fog lamps directly illuminate the ground in front of the vehicle, they do serve two purposes. The first is the intended use, which is to reduce glare in case of very poor visibility and let you go to your destination slowly. Another way is to look at what is on the ground in front of the vehicle under normal visibility conditions, because high beam lamps usually leave a large gap between the front of the vehicle and where the beam actually hits the road.

While it may be tempting to keep using fog lights to fill this void, there is actually a good reason to turn them off. The problem is that lighting up the road in front of you may open your eyes, which actually reduces your ability to fully see the darker road ahead of your vehicle. Therefore, although it may be useful to use the fog lamp to see the front of the vehicle when driving very slowly, turning on the fog lamp at normal driving speed and normal driving conditions can be very bad news.

The fact is that although fog lamps do have their uses, most people don't actually need them. Since they are only useful in very limited situations, you need them only if you do find yourself driving often in these specific situations. Even if you do often drive in poor visibility, fog lights still do not allow you to drive through snow or fog at high speed, even if everything is close to a reasonable level of safety.
