- Specific case
1. Classification of automotive LED headlight bulbs by driving position
Built-in driver LED Headlight Bulbs;
External driver LED Headlight Bulbs
2. What is a built-in driver LED headlight bulb?
The built-in driver is the LED headlight bulb whose drive circuit board is integrated in the lamp body, as shown in the figure below:
Look at the picture above, the LED headlight bulb is directly connected to the wire and plug, we can't see the driver, because it is already integrated in the lamp body.
3. What is an external drive LED headlight bulb:
The external driver LED headlight bulb is the separated design of the driver and the lamp body. The driver board is not integrated in the lamp body, but is independent and external, as shown in the figure below:
As you can see, the LED headlight bulb is first connected to the driver, and then the driver is connected to the plug.
4. Comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of built-in driver LED headlight bulbs and external driver LED headlight bulbs
1). Comparison in terms of ease of installation:
A. The built-in drive type LED car light bulb does not need to occupy additional installation space, and the installation rate is higher
The built-in driver is integrated in the lamp body, no external driver is required, which saves installation space and can be installed in a narrow lamp cup.
B. The external driver needs to occupy the installation space, and some LED headlight bulb assemblies cannot be installed
The external drive needs to occupy a special installation space, and the headlight assembly with a medium or small lamp cup may not be installed.
2). Comparison in terms of design difficulty:
A. Built-in driver design is more difficult
The design of the built-in driver board is limited by the internal space position of the sunflower (LED headlight bulb fin radiator), and it is necessary to repeatedly test the direction setting of the electronic circuit, as well as the layout of components such as diodes, MOS tubes, resistors, and inductors. If you are not careful, you will not let it go.
The built-in driver puts forward high requirements on the design ability and processing technology of the PCB board, and also forms a relatively high threshold. Only a few large manufacturers with strong original ability in the market can design integrated PCB driver boards with excellent performance, such as POPNOW.
B. The design of externally driven LED headlights is relatively easy.
The split drive board has its own space, and the space layout of components such as diodes, MOS tubes, resistors, and inductors can be relatively loose, and the requirements for electronic circuit design, electronic component layout, and processing technology are not as high as integrated ones.
Because the requirements in all aspects are relatively low, external drives are used more in the market now, but this is based on the premise of sacrificing the throughput rate.
3). Comparison in terms of power and heat dissipation:
A. In terms of power
The power of the externally driven LED headlight bulbs can be slightly higher. The integrated PCB drive board for driving LED headlight bulbs is integrated in the lamp body. Due to heat dissipation and design reasons, the power of externally driven LED headlight bulbs will be 3-5W higher than the integrated one.
B. In terms of heat dissipation
In terms of heat dissipation, whether it is built-in or external, the current mainstream cooling method is fan cooling. Fan cooling is an active cooling method, the fan rotates at high speed, and the air convection takes away the heat.
The LED headlight bulb with external drive is separated from the lamp body, so the heat dissipation is slightly better than that of the built-in type, but because everyone has a fan for heat dissipation, the heat dissipation effect of the two is almost the same.
4). Current status
External drive LED headlight bulbs have relatively low requirements in terms of component layout and process, so the external drive is used more in the market now, but this is based on the premise of sacrificing the throughput rate.
5). Current examples
A. Typical examples of built-in driver LED headlight bulbs
As mentioned above, the integrated PCB driver board requires high design capabilities and processing capabilities, and the entry threshold is relatively high.
For example, this POPOWLED headlight bulb not only has a built-in integrated PCB driver board, but also has a built-in cooling fan (the fan is built into the sunflower), which requires higher design and processing capabilities. At present, there are very few manufacturers in the market that can produce highly concentrated and highly integrated PCB driver boards like S6.
B. Typical examples of external drive LED headlight bulbs
Externally driven LED headlight bulbs, PCB driver board design and layout space can not be limited by the LED headlight bulb lamp body, can carry more electronic components, generally used for multi-functional or multi-color temperature LED headlight bulbs.
5. in conclusion:
Whether to use integrated or external configuration for automotive LED headlight bulb drivers, which method is better is currently inconclusive, and each has its own advantages.
The built-in driver does not need to occupy additional installation space, and the throughput rate is higher, but the design capability and processing technology of the PCB driver board are also required to be higher.
