Some people think that car projector headlights are brighter than reflector headlights. In fact, this is not the case. In theory, adding projector headlight will only reduce the brightness of the headlights.

I think there are two reasons why some cars use projector headlight. One is because the lighting configuration is inherently high and projector headlight must be used to adjust the light. The other is for aesthetics and upgrading. In terms of practicality, the former is definitely the best, and the latter may be just useless. Let’s talk about this issue in detail below.

Why is it said that adding a porjector headlight will reduce the brightness?

porjector headlight

This is the schematic diagram of an ordinary reflective headlight. After the headlight is turned on, the reflector bowl reflects all the light. In theory, no light is wasted.

However, the disadvantage of this kind of headlight is that the path of the light emitted completely depends on the angle of the reflective bowl, and the reflective bowl cannot be made so accurately that it can reflect all the light to the most reasonable position. Therefore, the light distribution of this type of headlight on the road surface is uneven, with bright areas being very bright and dark areas being very dark. The picture above shows the low-beam light of an ordinary reflective headlight. You can see that it is particularly bright in the middle, but the brightness becomes smaller as it gets closer to the edge.

The headlight lens is essentially a convex projector , and we all know that the convex projector headlights has a focusing function. Parallel light rays can converge at a point after being refracted by a convex projector. Similarly, if we set a light source at its focus, the convex projector headlights can turn it into parallel light. This is the principle of the headlight lens. A reflector is used to gather the light from the lamp beads at the focal point of the projector headlights, and then the light is evenly dispersed through the projector. This kind of headlight shines very evenly on the road. As we say, "the light pavement effect is good."

However, the structure of the projectors headlight determines that its utilization rate of light from the lamp bead is not as high as that of the reflective bowl. Because the projector headlights changes the light path through refraction, in order to obtain a more uniform and perfect light pattern, the incident light must be processed to a certain extent. Therefore, there is actually a light-shielding mechanism between the projector headlights and the lamp bead, which blocks light when the low beam is turned on. The headlights block part of the light in a designed shape, so not all the light from the bulbs shines on the road.

The role of projector headlight

We have already mentioned the principle of the projector. The projector allows the light of the headlight to shine out at regular angles and shapes. Some cars use high-power light bulbs or xenon light bulbs, which are extremely bright. If an ordinary reflective bowl system is used, the scattered light will seriously affect oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. At this time, you need to use a projector headlights to "modify" the light to avoid causing safety hazards. And the lighting effect will be better after using the projector headlights.

Also, we often say that it is best to add a projector headlights after changing to xenon headlights or LED headlights. The purpose is to control the headlight light so as not to affect other people. Because this kind of light is too strong, it will seriously affect other people if not controlled.

Projector are not omnipotent

Projector headlight are good but not perfect. Don’t think that all headlights with projector headlight are high-end products and will be particularly bright. Especially when buying a car, some people immediately think that the headlights of a certain model are very high-end when they see the projector headlights, and they think the lighting effect should be good. This is not the case. The projector headlights is not used to increase brightness, it is only used to modify the light. But projector headlights do look more advanced, so many manufacturers like to use them. But the quality and grade of the projector headlight are really not on the same level.

Generally speaking, xenon headlights and LED headlights have high brightness and need to use projector headlight to control the light to prevent dazzling. The lighting effect of this kind of headlight with projector headlights is naturally indistinguishable.

Some car headlights use ordinary halogen bulbs, and they can easily add a projector headlights. However, the brightness of such headlights cannot be guaranteed. Because the brightness of the halogen lamp itself is limited, the brightness will be reduced if added. It’s just that some manufacturers have good designs and use good projector, and their lighting effects are also good. And some manufacturers just do it for good looks, and the lighting effects are simply unbearable to look at.

So in the final analysis, the brightness of car lights mainly depends on the type of light source, not whether it has a projector headlights or not.

Because the cost of modifying lens headlights is relatively expensive, mini porjector lens LED Headlights are now available. There is no need to modify the reflector bowl. They can be installed only when the space of the headlight bowl is suitable. The effect is also very good, and they have been welcomed by many customers.
